Hand Sanitizer

I am sure most of you carrying this --hand sanitizer
(doesn't matter what brand are you using)
with you every time.
Especially now when the swine flu attacks.
I am using these Dettol brand hand sanitizer everyday.
However, i do wonder that how these liquid with the alcohol-based
actually help cleaning my hand?

According to my survey:
Well, most of us use this "to wash our hand"
because..

when water and soap are not available
easy, convenience, faster way of cleaning the hand
to make the hand more clean(all bacteria killed)

Well, is that so ? The product claimed to
" KILL ALL THE BACTERIA" ?
The verdict of hand sanitizer whether it is effective as washing your hands is still on till today.
I am going to reveal the unknown and the truth today!!

What is hand sanitizer actually?
--> is marketed as an effective way to "wash ours hand" when water and soap are not available.

--> is claimed as effective at killing germs

--> it is alcohol-based

How do hand sanitizers work?
--> It strips away the outer layer of oil on the skin

--> It prevent bacteria present in the body from coming to the surface of the hand.
However, these bacteria are generally not the kind of bacteria that will make us sick

Now come to the most important part of this post..

Why the manufacturers claim to kill 99.9% of germ?
--> This is because the product is tested on non-animated surface,hence it is able to kill 99.9% of bacteria !!

--> there is inherent complexity in the human hand, so it would be more difficult to get significant result

--> using surface with controlled variables is a more easy way to obtain the consistency in the result

What the research has shown(the truth)?
-->if the products were fully tested on hands, there would be different result

-->hand sanitizer do not significantly reduce the number of bacteria on the hand

--> in some cases, the amount bacteria is increase

Is it safe to use hand sanitizer?

--> i did mentioned about this for my last post. Some do contain triclosan in the ingredient, although it is not the major composition.

--> it is not to say that using hand sanitizer will kill you

In what condition hand sanitizer is better than hand soap?
--> many antibacterial soaps are not as effective as hand sanitizer

--> antibacterial soap use a chemical -TRICLOSAN to kill the bacteria on the skin's surface

--> TRICLOSAN need a significant amount of time to become effective( not the usual 30 seconds) most people spend on washing hand

--> hand sanitizer remains in contact with the skin long enough to allow the alcohol or other sanitizing agents finish the job of killing off harmful bacteria

Any useful recomments from researchers?
--> using a sanitizer is definitely better than using nothing at all but a good hand soap can virtually as effective under the right conditions

I noticed that most of the antibacterial products that I am using like hand soap, body foam, face wash, pimple treatment cream contains this--TRICLOSAN as main ingredient.

What is Triclosan?

>> It ia a diphenyl ether(bis-phenyl) derivative, known as 2,4,4-Trichloro-2-hydroxydiphenylether/5-Chloro-2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)phenol.
Structure of Triclosan

>> It is related in structure to a number of bis- phenyl polychlorinated and bis-phenyl chlorophenol compounds.

>>Triclosan is a potent wide-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent. It has been shown to be effective in reducing and controlling bacterial caontamination on the hands and on treated products.

>>Triclosan is removed during normal waste treatment processes and any of it that remains after waste treatment quickly breaks down into compound in the environment.

>>Products that contain Triclosan kill up to 99.6% of germs.

>> Triclosan degrade slowly and not soluble in water,so Triclosan effectiveness in hand soap is that it stays on the hands and continues to kill bacteria even after they have been rinsed and dried.

However,

>>Triclosan is a suspected endocrine disruptor (meaning it disrupts our natural hormone system). It is persistent, bioaccumulative in wildlife, and may lead to the creation of resistant bacteria (or Super Bugs!).

>>The famous toothpaste brand--Colgate also contains Triclosan as one of the ingredients.

How Triclosan in toothpaste can harm us?

>>It can react with chlorine in the tap water.Guess what you get? CHLOROFORM ! This is a toxic chemical that can give you cancer. In the old movies, you might have seen someone give a person chloroform to knock them unconscious. If you breathe enough chloroform, you will die.

PS:It has been reported also that Colgate is not safe to use anymore !!

Well, finally come out with it ! The new formula of CHEMISTRY ! CHEMical+mechanISm+sTRategY=? Yup, it's no other but CHEMISTRY !! Think about it, chemistry is simply about chemicals, apparatus/instrument (mechanism) and correct strategy to run an experiment right?

My very first post will be about the spread of swine flu or its scientifically name--A(H1N1) Flu. A(H1N1) Flu is believed started to spread from Mexico which is located at North America. All of us are not encouraged to go there as well as United State that share the border with Mexico. Well, the reason that make me so concern about this influenza is because I have the same early signs of this influenza recently. I am having sore throat, cough, headache, runny nose, lack of appetite and I feel like vomiting sometime. At first, I thought it was just normal sickness that I usually get when I lack concern about my health. I was thinking of go to the pharmacy to grab some medicine instead of going to hospital or clinic to avoid the crowd and queue but my mum insist that I go to hospital to have a thoroughly check through.

Oh come on, I hate this! First thought that come to mind speaking of hospital: crowd, noisiness which include children yelling and crying here and there, and the sickness face of all the patients inside the hospital. No one feel delighted here and it make me feel more SICK !!! I know I cant fight with my mum and I did go at the end.

First of all, we have to know the common FAQ about this influenza:

1. What is A (H1N1) influenza?

>> It is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A strains of the influenza virus.

2. How does it spread?

>>It only occur from human-to-human transmission. It spread through the air when people cough or sneeze . The infected droplets will get into their hands, most of the time will drop onto the surface and dispersed into the air. For safety purpose, people should cover their mouth and nose with tissue instead of into the air. Not forget to wash your hand after that !
